Grade 3 at CKS

The third grade curriculum takes a step up, strongly emphasizing the application of skills developed in earlier grades. The third grade curriculum provides more challenge, and while teacher supervision continues to be important, now the students are provided with many opportunities to learn about choices, and thus increased responsibility for the quality of their work, and more accountability for behavior.

Students continue in their Catholic faith formation, studying the seven sacraments, our church community, and its leaders. Through the lens of the Golden Rule, students examine how we interact in our classrooms, our school, our families, and our communities.

Language Arts & Reading

Students continue to develop their reading skills through a variety of genres. They make predictions, summarize reading, and answer questions that require analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Their writing should reflect a growing understanding of formal sentence structure, the four basic types of sentences, and how to use each sentence in written paragraphs. Major emphasis is placed on learning to explore and through the use of dictionaries, glossaries, and other reference books. Novels and reading anthologies are used to develop skills of sequencing, finding main ideas, settings and character development.

Continuing with Handwriting without Tears, the main focus now becomes the correct formation and joining of cursive letters.

Students extend their knowledge and skills with subtraction, addition, multiplication, and division of whole numbers. Further development in problem solving activities using computation, money, measurement, and geometry are explored. A strong emphasis is placed on students mastering their facts at the automatic level. Sadlier Progress in Math is used to support instruction.

The third grade curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards with an emphasis on scientific inquiry. The scientific method consisting of purpose, research, hypothesis, experiment, analysis, and conclusion is used. Our curriculum covers the study of earth, physical, and life sciences.

Social Studies

The goal of our curriculum is to prepare students to participate in society with the knowledge, skills and civic values to enable them to be actively and constructively involved. Our curriculum focuses on Geography and the study of the Native Americans of North America. All areas of study address history, geography, citizenship and the economy.

Service Projects

After preparing the Ash Wednesday liturgy, the children recognize that they must find ways to sing "Alleluia" and to live their Baptism. One way is by bringing joy to those with needs. With that in mind, 3rd grade sponsors a white sock collection to assist doctors and nurses who operate a "Foot Ministry" for the homeless at Central Presbyterian Church downtown. This ministry works in conjunction with the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
