Pre-first at CKS
Our Pre-First program is truly a gift of time, providing an ongoing, stimulating curriculum designed for children who have successfully completed the kindergarten program. The program adds additional time for these students to continue their preparation for a successful first grade program. The Pre-First class is an academic setting with a strong emphasis on Language Arts.
In this program, our class journeys together toward a deeper understanding of our religious beliefs and traditions. This sharing of faith includes many dimensions: doctrine, scripture, morality, prayer, liturgy and respect and love of the Catholic Church.
The Language Arts program in pre-first integrates reading, phonics, spelling, grammar and writing. Students use a variety of leveled readers and trade books in the reading program. Students are challenged at a first grade level in the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Handwriting is incorporated into the language arts block each day with an emphasis on pencil grip and letter formation. The Orton-Gillingham method of instruction is also employed in pre-first’s reading program.
Skills introduced are recognition of numbers, number order, one-to-one relationships, ordinal numbers, fractions, time, adding and subtracting to 10, recognition of coins and place value. McGraw-Hill SRA Real Math materials supplement the P-1 math program.
This program includes an awareness of current events, calendar work, and fire and safety rules. The children learn about several countries, including the USA, China, Egypt, and Christmas around the world.
The science and health curriculum includes activities related to the five senses, a unit on teeth, healthy foods, seasonal changes, the skeletal system, and an animal unit in the spring.
Pre-first students, along with kindergartners participate in the Joyous Toy Drive. After these little ones work on jobs at home to earn money, they purchase a toy that they would like for children whose parents utilize Buckhead Christian Ministry’s toy shop.
In coordination with science class, Pre-first students planted flowers in personally decorated pots and took them to Brighton Gardens assisted-living facility in Buckhead to decorate dinner tables for the residents While there the students entertained the residents with songs and spent time visiting with the residents.
