Religion
The program provides a balance between doctrine, scripture and the liturgical year, using Resources for Christian Living's Faith First as our text book. Scripture is included in every chapter of the text, and is included each day during prayer. The feasts and seasons of the liturgical year are incorporated into the course of study to help the students remember and celebrate all that God has done for us.
Language Arts
Language Arts encompasses the areas of literature, reading, speaking skills, grammar, vocabulary development, and spelling. Sixth grade students continue to develop an appreciation of written and spoken language. Writing skills are emphasized throughout the curriculum, especially helping students to respond to what they read, and to develop their own creativity. The Language Arts curriculum focuses on two interrelated areas of study: Literature/Vocabulary and English Grammar/Writing. In Literature, students acquire and expand reading skills through exposure to a variety of informational and fictional texts. By reading a variety of genre, students learn to recognize the elements of literature and literary devices. Class novels are selected for literary merit, cross curricular connections, and the opportunity to introduce the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching. In Vocabulary, students continue to expand both spoken and written vocabulary, and increase their knowledge of correct spelling. In English grammar and writing, students use the writing process, from pre-writing to publishing, to create and develop formal and informal pieces of writing and acquire a background in the conventions, usage, and mechanics of oral and written language.
Mathematics
The goal of the middle school math program is to provide all students with a strong foundation in mathematics according to their academic abilities, needs and motivation. The department recognizes the importance of mathematical computation at all levels. Students in the middle school are placed in an appropriate level of instruction according to Archdiocesan standards to ensure that students are both challenged and successful.
The sixth grade math course is designed to integrate the student's proficient elementary mathematical skills with the middle level of challenging concepts which will create the foundation for their algebraic experience. This course enables the students to use mathematics in the world around them as well as in their other courses of study. Students are provided opportunities to explore, problem solve, create mathematical models and work cooperatively with a partner or group. To aid in the assessment of the student's learning there is nightly homework, section quizzes, end of chapter tests, and cumulative tests each quarter. Sadlier Progress in Math supports instruction in 6th grade.
Science
Sixth grade science is focused on earth science. This course of study expands on prior knowledge of science concepts covered in elementary school, but explores more deeply the planet earth and its many wonders.
Social Studies
Sixth grade social studies classes use the text book, The World Scott-Foresman, Gold Edition (2008). The students will study the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, China, Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, Byzantium and Islam, Europe in the Middle Ages, and the Catholic Church in the world today. Included in each unit of study are workbook and reinforcement activities, key terms/people/places, atlas activities, independent reading writing activities, individual and group projects, research questions, homework quizzes and current events from Junior Scholastic Magazine.
Special Projects & Field Trips
During the fall, the students participate in a day long retreat that includes opportunities for prayer, faith-sharing, personal growth and community building. Second quarter brings a group project where students dramatize one of the Sunday Gospels of Advent in the form of a puppet show using homemade puppets. During third quarter, students participate in the "Potato Babies Project." Each student cares for a "baby" (in the form of a bag of potatoes) for three days. They learn about the responsibility of being a parent. They discuss and journal the experience. In conjunction with their Family Life "Potato Baby Project" sixth grade students plan and coordinate a baby shower to benefit Catholic Charities Pregnancy, Planning and Adoption Program. A trip to the Carlos Museum of Emory’s campus enriches the social studies curriculum.
