I came to Christ the King parish as a newly ordained priest in 1965. I found a vibrant,
active school only 27 years old just two years older than me. Staffed by the Grey Nuns
of the Sacred Heart, the school was at the center of our parish life.
Conditions were not as pleasant as they are today. Some classrooms had over sixty
students. There was no air-conditioning and visiting classrooms on those hot September
days was a daunting experience for me.
The “priest” got to give out the report cards. We were wont to single out the religion,
conduct and deportment sections for special comment and emphasis. This could have
been partially influenced by stereotypes such as Bing Crosby in the “Bells of St. Mary’s”
but even then, we had a sense of the vital importance and influence of the Catholic school
in molding the “youth of tomorrow” which now populate our yesterdays and years.
The school has evolved and matured, keeping up with the times. It sought and received
accreditation and the well-deserved blue ribbon as a School of Excellence. Strategic
planning led to an upgrade and expansion of facilities with “state-of-the-art” equipment.
It lowered the teacher-student ratio and developed its teachers and curriculum to meet
the highest modern standards. Christ the King School enjoys a place of high esteem
among other Catholic and private schools.
The key to the ongoing greatness of Christ the King School is still the magnificent
community built by a well-bonded and mutually supportive team of parents and school
faculty. They share a deep love of Catholic education and a burning desire to impart
their faith through the medium of a Catholic school.
Perhaps equally, if not most importantly, the students respond to this caring, nourishing
environment with an intake of knowledge, faith and values as naturally as the air they
breathe. This is clearly evident in the witness of several students at a recent Open House
and also on the faces of the children on the playground, in the classrooms and at their
school liturgies.
May God bless this alma mater of so many who walked her halls yesterday and to the
church of tomorrow growing daily in the presence of Christ Our King in His Cathedral
on the hill above.
