Mary Ellen Rich Howley, Member at Large
I credit my parents, Lucille, and Eddie Rich, with my lifelong devotion to CTK as they were charter members and supporters of Christ the King and were present for the consecration of the building, first Mass and many fundraising efforts to see the school completed and opened in 1937 and the Cathedral completed in 1939. The majority of their friends were parishioners and just as active which truly made this church “home.” I entered CTK school in its second year of operation in 1938 as a first grader at age 5, as there were no kindergarten programs at the time. There were eight Sisters of the Gray Nuns of the Sacred Heart who taught us and my first and second grade class was combined. Upon graduation from the 8th grade, I continued on to the all-girls Christ the King High School, which was located in the basement of the Cathedral and graduated in 1951. After attending Webster College in St. Louis, I taught physical education at CTK and later was a secretary to the principal at the new St. Pius X High School. In 1961, I married John M. Howley, Jr. at the Cathedral and we raised our family of five children in St. Jude’s Parish in Sandy Springs. I re-entered the workforce in 1976 as a city of Atlanta guide for Tour Gals/Atlanta Arrangements, Inc. and retired as partner and director of tour and travel in 2001. My husband and I re-joined CTK after our children had grown in the 1980’s and became involved in the parish once again. Since retirement, I have volunteered at CTK in many weekly activities and in our community with other organizations. Christ the King has been my home all of my life and I credit my strong faith to my parents and the Gray Nuns of the Sacred Heart. I am grateful that my brother, Bill Rich, and I had had such a strong Catholic influence in Atlanta as the Catholic population during the 1930-60’s was only 2% and was considered a mission country. |
