The instructional program at Christ the King school allows for a progression of skills and competencies. Each student is encouraged to advance at the pace most appropriate to his or her age, developmental stage and ability, and to accept the responsibility for his or her own learning. Christ the King School is accredited by and meets the standards of Cognia (formerly AdvancED), the parent company of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). All teachers maintain valid certification. Students at all levels receive instruction in the core subjects of religion, reading, mathematics, language arts, spelling, writing, science, social studies, and the enrichment programs.
This rigorous set of Standards adheres to both Georgia State and National Standards, preparing students to thrive in a rapidly changing world. As part of a comprehensive K-12 curriculum arc, students graduate from CKS with the tools they need to meet the challenges of high school and beyond.
CKS strives to provide students with a well-rounded curriculum that is challenging, yet developmentally appropriate for every grade level. Students who attend a K-8 parochial school travel through a myriad of developmental ages and stages during their educational journey. We take very seriously our call to educate “the whole child,” working hard to also nurture and preserve our children’s mental and emotional health. We want our students to become responsible citizens of the world; individuals who are engaged, faithful, service-oriented, and intellectually curious. Every CKS student is a unique gift made in God’s image, and we are dedicated to his/her education at every stage of development.

K-2 Curriculum
Early elementary school is an exciting time where students first enter a formal school environment. Our goal is to develop life-long learners who are excited to attend school and learn for learning’s sake. Understanding that children in this developmental stage crave familiarity, structure, and movement, CKS helps students establish a solid foundation through the development of their social, emotional, self- help skills, and academic skills. We use a variety of programs, approaches, and strategies to meet individual student needs. Some curriculum highlights include:

3-5 Curriculum
Students in this age group are developmentally prepared to assume more responsibility and a greater sense of personal accountability for their learning; our teachers focus on building their executive function skills while instilling confidence and an “I can do it!” attitude. Knowing that we are preparing these students for middle school, we scaffold content knowledge while challenging students to develop life skills, critical thinking skills, and an understanding of how to apply these skills to their daily lives. Middle School Curriculum
Our goal in the middle school is to provide students with three years of high school preparation so they leave CKS confident and ready to take on the challenges of high school and beyond. Our Hyland Center offers the middle school their own space with more opportunities to hone their executive function and abstract reasoning skills. We strive to offer our middle school students a more advanced, mature, and developmentally appropriate educational environment meant to prepare them for a new campus in high school. We are preparing our students to be citizens of the world who contribute to society on many levels through academics, service, and a God-centered approach to tackling complex issues.
At the same time, we honor our students’ developmental needs by supporting their social-emotional growth in a nurturing, safe, and supportive environment. Adolescents may appear ready to take on the world, but they are still young children who need structure, guidance, and strong adult support. We are firm believers in the “Top Dog Theory” (see Articles below) and advocate for the K-8 educational model. Our teachers develop personal relationships with their students so they can advocate for students as they grow and mature into young adults. Some curriculum highlights include:

Enrichment
Committed to educating the "whole child," CKS offers a variety of opportunities for students to explore and develop their academic and creative talents.
Visual Arts: painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, collage, weaving, oil pastel, foil embossing, stop-motion animation, and ceramics. Music: Music at Christ the King School is a Kodály-inspired program where students experience music as they learn to sing, read, hear, and play. Lessons are active, with students engaging in singing games, folk dancing, music literacy games, and creative activities. Kindergarten and Pre First are focused on creating “Beautiful, Tuneful, and Artful” children. Reading begins in First Grade and continues through Eighth Grade. Fourth Graders receive their own recorders and learn to play them, continuing instruction in Fifth Grade. In Middle School, students are encouraged to fill out their music learning with Music History components; students also engage in units based around specific styles of music, from Jazz to Musical Theater to Rap. Other instruments that are incorporated into K-8 instruction are Orff instruments, ukuleles, a wide range of drums, and small hand percussion. Physical Education: Physical Education is an integral part of the total education of the whole child at Christ the King Catholic School. Students gain the necessary knowledge to understand the importance of physical fitness and health through exposure to a variety of activities. Lessons are structured for quality learning experiences that create an environment fostering individual success, positive self-image, social behavior, leadership ability and moral development. Spanish: The Enrichment Spanish program at Christ the King School strives to introduce students to and prepare them to live in a global, multilingual world. Through the study of a world language, students will develop a sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic heritages of other groups and will be prepared to participate in a society characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity. The CKS elementary Spanish program develops receptive and spoken skills through games, puppetry, song, movement, and role plays. The Middle School Spanish Program is focused on preparation for high school Spanish with an emphasis on grammar, language structures and cultural knowledge and understanding. Our Spanish curriculum is designed to introduce and strengthen students’ language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as appropriate for their skill level and exposure. 21st Century Life Skills: An enrichment course spanning across all grade levels K-8, our "21st Century Skills" course seeks to strengthen students' understanding of library media and technology-based skills (reading engagement, information and research, media literacy, digital citizenship, keyboarding, multimedia creation, basic programming and robotics) while supporting the development of "soft skills" needed to thrive in the 21st Century--literacy, critical thinking, communication, creativity, problem-solving, perseverance, collaboration, just to name a few! |
